What the AI Act asks of you
Four obligations, two of them already in force. Each page below says what the rule demands, whether it is aimed at a company like yours, what moved in the July 2026 amendment, and which widely repeated version of it is wrong. Most of the errors run the same way: they ask a small company for more than the law does.

AI literacy
In force since 2 February 2025
Article 4 binds every provider and deployer of AI systems, with no exemption for small companies, and it has applied since 2 February 2025. It was also rewritten last month, and the new version asks for less than the old one did.

Transparency
In force since 2 August 2026
Article 50 became applicable on 2 August 2026. These are disclosure duties rather than engineering ones, which makes them both the cheapest obligations to meet and the most visible to fail: tell people when they are dealing with AI, and mark what AI produced.

Prohibited practices
In force since 2 February 2025
Some uses of AI are prohibited outright, with no transition period, no exemption by company size and no compliance route that makes them acceptable. They have applied since 2 February 2025, and the Digital Omnibus added two more with effect from 2 December 2026.

High-risk systems
Applies from 2 December 2027
This is the heavy part of the AI Act, and it is the part that moved. Annex III systems now fall due on 2 December 2027 and Annex I on 2 August 2028. Less widely noticed is that the definition of what counts narrowed at the same time, which takes some companies out of the regime altogether.
